The Other Side

When you can take a mile on your emerald trail
and your mount reflects your sapphire sky,
when you can bid your sun that evening farewell
and it waves back from your crystal lake,
when would you ever wonder about the other side

where we take ours around our littered lawns
in search of cans and pray for a pound,
where we offer our gold to gods at the pawns
for rent, for groceries, and pray for a lotto —
why would you ever wonder about this other side?
